What causes swollen gums?

There are many reasons why your gums might be irritated. It’s possible that you brushed or flossed a little too vigorously that morning. Or you might have a piece of food stuck down between your gums. Swollen gums are also common during pregnancy.

However, there are also much more dangerous underlying causes of inflamed gums. The most common being gum disease. In fact, inflamed, swollen, and bleeding gums are one of the first signs of gum disease and should never be ignored.
