Missing one or more teeth? Need an implant or denture?

Ensure a strong and stable foundation for your restoration!

When you’re missing one or more teeth, it causes problems for your jaw. With nothing left to support, your jawbone will slowly start to disintegrate, a process known as resorption.

That’s where Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) comes in. This procedure rebuilds the bone that’s been lost, creating an adequate, strong, and stable foundation to replace a missing tooth.

What is Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR)?

Guided Bone Regeneration has been a staple of implant dentistry for over 40 years. This procedure encourages the growth of new bone at the site of a missing tooth, stabilizing the area and creating new and healthy bone structure.

Do you need a GBR procedure?

To successfully replace a missing tooth, we first need to ensure that your jawbone is healthy. Not only does your jaw need to be stable, you also need enough bone structure to hold the restoration in place.

However, just because you’re missing a tooth doesn’t mean you automatically need Guided Bone Regeneration before a restoration procedure. We’ll evaluate the site of your missing tooth to determine the health of your jawbone and whether or not GBR is necessary.

If we do recommend GBR as necessary for the long-term success of your implant or denture, we’ll make sure you know exactly what to expect.

Although it can take many months for your bone to fully integrate after a GBR procedure, our periodontists can often place an implant or denture at the same time that a GBR procedure is performed.

Our experience with Dr. Pumphrey and his team was quite an incredible experience. You can tell that everyone on his team worries about all the details. We felt truly cared for and would recommend this practice to anyone.

Frequently asked questions about GBR

How does guided bone regeneration work?

Guided bone regeneration creates a barrier between the soft tissue and the bone, allowing the bone to regenerate without interference from other tissues. The barrier is typically made of a special membrane that is placed over the affected area during surgery.

Who can benefit from guided bone regeneration?

Guided bone regeneration is typically recommended for patients who have lost bone tissue due to periodontal disease or trauma or for those who are planning to receive dental implants. It can also correct deformities in the jawbone or regenerate bone tissue after tooth extraction.

Is guided bone regeneration painful?

The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, so patients should not feel any pain during the surgery. However, some discomfort and swelling may occur in the days following the procedure.

What is the recovery process like after guided bone regeneration?

Recovery time can vary depending on the extent of the procedure and the individual patient’s healing process. Patients may experience some swelling and discomfort in the days following the procedure, but these symptoms can typically be managed with pain medication and rest. Following the dentist’s instructions for post-operative care is important, including maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding certain foods and activities.

Are there any risks associated with guided bone regeneration?

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with guided bone regeneration. These can include infection, bleeding, and damage to surrounding teeth or tissues. However, these risks are typically low and can be minimized with proper planning and execution of the procedure.

How can I find out if guided bone regeneration is right for me?

If you are experiencing bone loss in your jaw or are planning to receive dental implants, we may recommend guided bone regeneration as a treatment option. To learn more about the procedure and determine if it is right for you, schedule a consultation with us.
